My name is Duncan MacLeslie. As so many young people do after they graduate high school, I went to a University. And, as so many that go to a university without really knowing what they wanted to do, I dropped out of it after two years. That was 2019. I had tried architecture, photography and computer science, but all of it felt like butting my head into a brick wall. So I stepped back. I worked as a barista, and started to tinker in my parents garage. I'd grown up on a farm, and my dad is one of the handiest people I know, but for whatever reason it had never sparked my interest until now.
Over the next year, I built several bookshelves, loft beds, and even a home bar for the house I was renting. My mom, seeing me excel at home woodworking, suggested I look into schools related to the craft. That's how I found Hennepin Technical College. I started my career there in August of 2020, and was in love with the craft and the community before the first week was done. While there I learned all the skills I know today, and was able to excel at and embrace my newfound passion as much as I wanted. Two years later, in the spring of 2022, I graduated from the program. It was a bittersweet moment for me, because I had realized that I'd also fell in love with learning. I didn't want to leave, to stop learning for those who could teach me.
So while one of my goals is to continue to work on my craft and create, it is another one of my goals to continue to seek out opportunities to learn and broaden my horizon.
